Utah Law welcomes local sixth graders exploring their dream careers

The University of Utah hosted sixth graders from Whittier Elementary in West Valley City for Imagine U Day, a program aimed to illustrate to young students that a secondary education is obtainable when they follow their passions.

During the weeks preceding Imagine U Day, the Whittier students wrote essays on what they would like to be when they grow up. Organizers of the events chose six career experiences across the University of Utah campus based on the students’ interests.

Students interested in the legal field got to play the role of attorneys and judges at the S.J. Quinney College of Law during a mock trial focused on liability for damage to a vehicle after a baseball game.

After the mock trial concluded, students participated in a mediation activity, showcasing one of the common alternatives to trial. Students agreed to settle for $2000 and the cost of a pet turtle, which was not related to the case but was found to be a reasonable damage award by all parties. Finally, students took a tour of the law school, where they most enjoyed the rolling bookshelves in the library.
